Three-Lane Gravity Roller Conveyor Assembly Line Case Study

posted in: Case Studies

SPG Conveyor Systems designed, manufactured, and installed this bespoke gravity roller conveyor system for a production and assembly line application, completed in 2020.

The Request

The customer needed to move parts between two separate work areas, including through a room divider. They wanted reliable, low-maintenance product flow. Crucially, they did not need powered movement or complex automation.

The Result

For assembly line applications like this, roller conveyors are often the most practical and cost-effective choice. Where a powered system would be over-engineered, gravity does the work instead — keeping things simple, quiet, and easy to maintain.

Our team manufactured a three-lane gravity roller conveyor to suit the customer's exact floor layout. Specifically, the system included:

  • A 3,275mm straight section feeding into a 90-degree bend, so products move around a corner and between rooms
  • A further 780mm straight section beyond the bend, with end stops to control product flow at the delivery point
  • Support stands throughout, raising the conveyor to a working height of 900mm

The 90-degree bend is a particularly important feature. Rather than reconfiguring their workspace, the customer kept their existing room layout and we built the conveyor to fit around it. This approach reflects how SPG Conveyor Systems works — we build to suit your space and process, not the other way around.

Why Gravity Roller Conveyors Work Well for Assembly Lines

Gravity roller conveyors suit assembly and production environments well. In particular, they are a strong fit when:

  • Parts need to move between workstations or rooms at a controlled pace
  • A powered system would be unnecessary or impractical
  • Low noise and minimal maintenance are priorities
  • Budget efficiency matters without compromising reliability

Because gravity conveyors need no motors or electrical supply along the conveyor run, installation is straightforward. As a result, they are simple to operate and carry very low ongoing maintenance costs. For many assembly line applications, they are the most cost-efficient long-term choice.

For applications that require powered movement or accumulation control, we also manufacture a full range of roller conveyors including powered and 24V driven options.

Manufactured and Installed in the UK

Our team designs and builds every conveyor system in-house at our East Yorkshire factory. Furthermore, all systems come with a 24-month parts warranty as standard. Our own installation team sets up each system on site, so it is ready to work from day one.
